Bears Pictures - Diet

Almost all species of Bears are omnivores, like people. It means that their diet consists of many different things. Bears eat various parts of plants: roots, berries, fruits, acorns; they also like insects, birds, eggs and small mammals, such as mice, or squirrels. Large Bears can kill large game, such as deer. If food is scarce, Bears are able to feed on carrion and road kill. Bears like honey very much and will often break wild beehives, and get themselves painfully stung.

Some species are more specialized on a certain type of food. Polar Bears live on the arctic ice and are pure carnivores, hunting seals and fish. On rare occasions, these Bears find berries and other plants.

The giant panda is almost a pure herbivore; it feeds on 30 various types of bamboo. Very rarely do giant pandas scavenge and eat plants other than bamboo. The sloth Bear feeds mainly on termites, so it is an insectivore. This species has a specially adapted muzzle that forms a tube through which the animal sucks up insects from the nest.

Black and brown Bears, that live close to people in the USA and Canada, often come to towns and raid dumps and backyards searching for human and dog food. Some Bears are intelligent and insolent enough to destroy cars and hiking camps where the food is stored. Human food is more nutritious and tasty for Bears and they easily become addicted to it.
