Panda Bear Fact

The main Panda Bear fact concerning the classification of the species was not known for sure until the late 20th century. Giant Pandas were supposed to belong to the Ailuridae or Procyonidae families; only recent studies have proved that the Giant Panda is of the Ursidae family. It’s a cousin of all modern bears, but the closest relative of the Giant Panda is the Sun Bear that lives in the forests of the Southern America.

Giant Pandas prefer isolated areas high in the mountains shrouded in heavy clouds and mists. It’s a sad Panda Bear fact that these animals are very vulnerable. They are an easy prey for numerous predators and hunters. Although Pandas were considered to be divine animals in old-time China, they were hunted for their dense hides and other body parts. Low reproductive rate makes the situation worse.

Though little is known about the adaptations and lifestyle of Pandas, the appearance of these animals is a Panda Bear fact that everyone knows. This species is characterized by a dense white coat with striking black markings around the eyes, on ears, feet, shoulders, and chest. White fur varies from pure white to cream and light brown. Such mottled coloring provides an effective camouflage and is also a sign for other Pandas that the area is occupied. The head of the Panda is large; the body and limbs are well-muscled; the tail is short. Giant Pandas are not large compared to other bears. They measure up to 180 cm in body length and weigh between 80 and 125 kg, like American and Asiatic Black Bears. Unlike other bears, Giant Pandas cannot walk on their hind legs and don’t hibernate in winter.

Giant Pandas are perfectly adapted to pure vegetarian diet. To consume large amounts of bamboo shoots, the throat and the stomach of the Panda have a tough lining to prevent injury. The forepaws of the Panda are very flexible. The wrist bone acts like an opposable thumb that allows picking the best shoots and leaves. A funny Panda Bear fact is that the manner of eating of the Giant Panda is very close to human behavior.
